On June 23, 2023, he, along with five others, namely Bethel Makuochukwu, John Joseph, Favour Chidiogo Emmanuel, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman Temidayo, and Joel Kator, was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison for money laundering.


Interestingly, while Shallipopi was serving his sentence, his song “Ex Convict” remarkably topped the #1 spot on the Nigerian music chart, thanks in part to a repost from the highly influential Afrobeat king, Wizkid. This unexpected twist further added to Shallipopi’s controversial reputation.

In a statement released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), it was revealed that the defendants impersonated foreign nationals, using false identities to defraud unsuspecting victims. The court ordered them to forfeit all electronic gadgets, furniture, and other items recovered from them to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
