Who is DJ Spinall?
DJ Spinall, born Sodamola Oluseye Desmond on April 29, 1984 in Lagos, Nigeria, began his journey as a DJ in his teenage years, quickly rising to prominence for his innovative blends of Afrobeats, Hip-Hop, and Dancehall. In 2012, he founded TheCAPMusic, a music label that has become a powerhouse in the Nigerian music scene. Known for his electrifying performances and groundbreaking collaborations with most successful African artists, DJ Spinall has earned numerous awards and accolades, and continues to be a trailblazer in the music industry.
Early Life
DJ Spinall’s early life wasn’t easy. He grew up in the rough and tumble neighborhood of Mushin in Lagos, Nigeria. Despite the challenges of poverty and gang violence, he discovered his love of music at a young age, and honed his DJ skills by spinning records at local parties and events. He faced many obstacles, but his talent and determination saw him rise to the top of the Nigerian music scene, becoming one of the country’s most respected and beloved artists.
When Spinall was a teenager, he worked as a radio DJ at a local station, honing his skills and developing a reputation for his unique style. He also hosted local dance parties, building a following and a reputation as a talented performer. He faced many challenges along the way, including financial struggles and pressure to abandon his dream in favor of a more stable career. Education
DJ Spinall completed his primary and secondary school in Lagos, including obtaining a mandatory Senior School leaving Certificate (SSCE) and the West African Examination Council (WAEC) certificate. Afterward, he attended a University not too far from Lagos at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun state, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
Musical Career
Spinall’s career has been marked by numerous collaborations with other artists, both in Nigeria and internationally. He’s worked with the likes of Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido, and many more. He’s also known for his ability to fuse different genres and styles, blending Afrobeats, dancehall, reggae, and hip-hop into his unique sound. His hits include “Ohema,” “Nowo,” “Dis Love,” and “Pressure,” to name a few.
Spinall’s debut album, My Story (2015), featured the hit singles “Oluwa,” “Gba Gbe E,” and “Money.” DJ Spinall’s sophomore album, TEN, was released on October 10, 2016, the following year. Among those featured on the album are Davido, Sauti Sol, and Mr. Eazi, with lead singles “Package” featuring Davido and “Ohema” featuring Mr. Eazi. Dreams, his third studio album, was released on October 8, 2017, with the singles “Opoju,” “Calm Down,” and “Gimme Luv.” Spinall’s “fourth” studio album, Iyanu, was released on October 26, 2018.
The album includes two lead singles: “Nowo,” which OkayAfrica describes as one of the 15 biggest Nigerian songs of 2018, featuring Wizkid, and which also peaked on MTV Base’s Official Naija Top 10 Countdown, and “Baba,” which features Kizz Daniel and made it to MTV Base’s Top 20 Hottest Naija tracks of 2018. On the BET Awards 2017 Red Carpet, Spinall became the first African DJ to perform at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, in 2015, with other supporting acts including Davido, Sarkodie, and R2Bees, as well as host Eddie Kadi.
He is also the first Nigerian DJ to perform in five US cities: New York, Miami, Houston, Austin, and Washington, D.C. DJ Spinall revealed the featured acts and producers for his fourth studio album, Iyanu, on October 24, 2018. Wizkid, Kizz Daniel, Davido, Burna Boy, Tekno, Nonso Amadi, Wurld, Dotman, and others appear on the album. DJ Spinall produced the album exclusively, with Killertunes, CKAY, Nonso Amadi, Benie Macaulay, and Stg co-producing. The lead singles from the album are Nowo,” featuring Wizkid, and Baba,” featuring Kizz Daniel. TheCAP Music released the album independently on October 26, 2018.
In 2019, Beyoncé released an hour-long documentary about her journey through Africa, which was shot in Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa, and the United States. The documentary aired on ABC on September 16th, and DJ Spinall appeared and spoke about the album. He signed an international major deal with Atlantic Records UK and a publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music UK on September 11, 2018. In 2015, he signed a contract with Guinness Nigeria as a Smirnoff Brand Ambassador, which he renewed in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. Spinall signed a multi-million naira deal with Pepsi Nigeria on March 20, 2018.

DJ Spinall has a son by name Mofetoluwa from his undisclosed lover. In 2020, he displayed a picture of him holding his son in an Instagram post with a caption Special Year !!! I’m truly blessed.
